About Forecast Norway

MET Norway's own models, taken seriously. The Norwegian Meteorological Institute publishes an unusually good set of open forecasts and publishes them free, with no key and no quota. This site renders five of them on one instrument: the 1 km MET Nordic grid that sits behind Yr, the raw 2.5 km MEPS run underneath it, AROME-Arctic over Svalbard and the Barents, the WAVEWATCH III and WAM sea states, and the radar mosaic with its own two-hour nowcast.

Navigate by place, not by zoom. Landsdeler, fylker, towns, the sea areas, Svalbard — each is a framing you press a button for, and the finest model that covers the place answers. Flipping between models holds the valid time, so what changes on screen is the forecast, not the camera.

How it is drawn

Celsius and metres per second. Norway states wind in m/s and so does this site — and the colour scale breaks where the national wind-force scale breaks: liten kuling at 10.8, stiv kuling at 13.9, sterk kuling at 17.2, liten storm at 20.8, full storm at 24.5, orkan at 32.7. A ramp that broke at other numbers would be a chart about a different country.

Absolute colour scales, and a value under every pixel. Every ramp is pinned to real values, never re-fitted per frame, so a loop shows the weather changing rather than the palette moving. Each frame is a palettised PNG drawn through a fixed 128-entry table, which makes it a reversible encoding: hover anywhere and the pixel is inverted back to the number that made it.

One time axis for every model — hourly to T+36, three-hourly after. That is a design decision, not an accident of what each feed offers: the whole argument of the site is that the corrected 1 km grid and the raw 2.5 km run can be flipped between with nothing changing on screen but the forecast, and a comparison where the time axis also changes is not a comparison.

Nothing is downloaded. MET Norway publishes one large multi-variable file per cycle — a MEPS run carries 258 variables, of which this site draws 22 — so the ingest reads slices over OPeNDAP rather than fetching files, and only the index box each map actually needs. The render runs on a machine in Europe, next to the data; only finished images cross to the web host.

All forecast data on this site comes from MET Norway, the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, through thredds.met.no, and is used under the Norwegian Licence for Open Government Data (NLOD) 2.0 and Creative Commons BY 4.0. MEPS is run jointly with SMHI and FMI as MetCoOp.
